It is the purpose of this position to imaginatively and effectively bring children and books together and to help children enjoy the library as they learn to use it and develop the library habit. This position is responsible for making children feel welcome and at ease in the library and for helping them to use the library and develop library skills, for selecting books for children’s and Young Adult collections, for supervising and training the Youth Services Assistant. This person must plan, market, and successfully execute Summer Reading activities and other programs for children (story time, etc.), as well as provide regular outreach to area daycares, Head Start centers, and similar groups.



Job Objective

The Youth Services Specialist oversees the implementation of all aspects of the library’s services for youth and young adults.


Essential Duties, Tasks and Accountabilities

  • Serves as the person in charge when the Director is out and addressing issues that arise.

  • Provides library services to children.

  • Supervises Youth Services staff.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and procedures, appraising performance, addressing complaints, resolving problems, and planning, assigning, and directing work.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of library procedures, and long-range plans relating to children services.

  • Responsible for collection development and management of materials for youth and young adult collections.

  • Develops new and imaginative children’s programs to encourage use of the library and to achieve educational goals.

  • Oversees the planning, scheduling and hosting of youth and young adult programming.

  • Maintains relationships with relevant local school personnel.

  • Provides outreach programming.

  • Monitors expenditures for assigned areas such as collection development and programming.

  • Prepares monthly and annual statistics reports of Youth Services.

  • Ability to seek grant opportunities and write simple grant application for supplemental program funding.

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services.

  • Keeps informed of trends and developments in librarianship, especially regarding children’s services.

  • Participates in library committees and individual projects as assigned.

  • Attends relevant library system meetings and training programs.

  • Participates on a regional and state level in activities geared to children services.

  • Keeps children and youth areas neat, attractive and inviting.

  • Learn and become proficient in use of automation system.

  • Learn and become proficient in use of computer programs used in producing materials for youth services.

  • Assists in having shelves read and straightened regularly.

  • Attends applicable workshops, conferences, continuing-education classes.

  • Coordinates volunteer program in Youth Services.

  • Participates in work schedule, which includes Saturday hours on a rotation basis and may include evenings and Sundays if service hours change.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.




  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in library science or an education field related to children or suitable experience. Prior experience with children’s library services preferred.

  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.

  • Storytelling ability.

  • Ability to work with a diverse public.

  • Knowledge of youth and young adult literature and current publishing trends.

  • Knowledge of trends in library programming for youth.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Wide reading background.

  • Proficient with use of computers and their applications as used in the delivery of current library services. Experience with MS Office products.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience with online social media, digital library materials, and makerspace technology.

  • Flexibility and teamwork are critical to this position.


Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The range is $23,000-$33,000. Benefits include state health and life insurance, participation in the State of Mississippi retirement system (PERS), and personal and medical leave. This is a full-time, salaried, permanent position. Three references required.
